Course Description:

A study of the types of communication required to function effectively in the business environment. Students will learn about message strategy, effective business writing including formal report writing and other business correspondence, presentation skills, verbal and non-verbal components of communication, and dyadic and small-group communication. Appropriate computer technology will be incorporated into the course such as use of the Internet, e-mail, etc.

Prerequisites: BUS 216, ITM 100, and COM 225.


Course Outcomes/Learning Objectives:

This course will cover the different types of communication necessary to function effectively within the business environment. This course will focus on enhancing critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills related to communication. Students will learn about non-verbal and verbal communication, effective written skills, creating letters, memos and resumes, delivering a persuasive presentation, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and developing and delivering presentations individually and within groups.

 

Other course objectives are as follows:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the different modes of communication and how to leverage them effectively in the workplace.
  2. Plan, write, and produce a wide variety of messages and documents in the appropriate style for each audience and situation.
  3. Create a working resume portfolio and develop a personal persuasive pitch for how you will sell yourself to a future employer.
  4. Gain self-awareness around personal communication skills and learn how to effectively and respectfully provide and receive constructive feedback.
  5. Learn how to work collaboratively with a team to produce a professional business presentation.
